Star Wars

Star Wars: This was the alternate ending of the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith

George Lucas eventually chose the other option, although the reasons for this change are not known.

Star Wars La Venganza de los Sith

In Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Darth Vader, and Obi-Wan Kenobi face off in a harrowing duel to the death. The Jedi Master arrives on Mustafar as a stowaway and confronts his former apprentice, who has already succumbed to the Dark Side. Both ignite their respective lightsabers and set out to fight. The end of this story was not always as it appeared in the final cut of the film, as the ending was originally intended to be quite different. In the original version, Obi-Wan uses his high-ground advantage to cut off his Padawan’s legs. In the alternate cut, the situation is different.

Obi-Wan cut off Anakin’s arms and legs

Nick Gillard, the film’s stunt coordinator, has confirmed (via Chris Castellani) that three more films were made with the discarded footage. He also explained what this alternate version was like: “Anakin grabs Obi by the throat. He disarms him, too: his lightsaber’s on the floor... and he says, ‘Listen, I’m really sorry, but it has to be this way.’ And he launches his lightsaber [to] cut his head off. And Obi — in a defense move — turns out of it, [summons] his lightsaber to parry that blow that’s coming for his head, [and] in the turn goes through Anakin’s arms...,” which are eventually severed. " It worked beautifully, because neither of them could see each other, just for a second as they were turning. The upshot was that Obi went through his arms, and through his legs in the same move, a diagonal...”

Despite all this extra footage, the truth is that ‘Star Wars’ has never had an extended version as such. There have been editions with retouched extra scenes, but not of the prequels.

All Star Wars films are available on Disney+.
