Starfield includes a touching tribute to a fan who passed away before being able to play
While Alex Hay followed Starfield since its announcement, his battle with cancer means he never got to try the game. Now Bethesda has paid tribute to him.
Bethesda Game Studios did not forget about Alex Hay, a 36-year-old fan who passed away a few months ago due to lung cancer. Months ago, the young man lamented on Reddit about the delay of Starfield, since it was not very likely that he would be able to play the space title from the creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Now it seems like the developers have paid him a touching tribute within the adventure.
Players can find a note from Alex Hay in the game. “To all my friends and fellow explorers. I’m always with you, out in the starfield. Love always, Alex Hay.” As you would expect, the Reddit thread has been updated with multiple memorial messages.
Where in Starfield is the letter from Alex Hay
Alex Hay’s note is not scattered among the stars, it can be found in the game world. As pointed out by Eurogamer, the missive is in the Eye.
“Bit gutted at the date reveal as I’ve been following this project for years and now it looks like I won’t get to play it,” he wrote on Reddit. “Was disappointed with the delay from November as I’d stopped treatment for my lung cancer (aged 35, never smoked) in September and was looking forward to it as a distraction. Now I’m under palliative care being looked after by my parents and playing my Xbox is a great form of escapism for me but holding out another 6 months is unlikely so… enjoy it on my behalf!”
Shortly after, the family responded by announcing his passing. “He loved LOVED Bethesda games. Combining Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and the Fallout games, he would’ve put tens of thousands of hours into those worlds.”
Starfield is currently available in early access for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. The game officially comes out on September 6, and the review scores are painting a pretty good picture for it.
