‘Stranger Things’ creators say Eleven’s fate will be revealed in 20 years

Speaking on a podcast, the Duffer brothers addressed fan theories about Eleven and the decision to leave her fate unclear.

Stranger Things final
Update:

The finale of ‘Stranger Things’ aired about five months ago, leaving Eleven’s fate up to fans to decide what happened to her. But if the theories don’t satisfy you and the uncertainty is eating away at you, the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, have set a date for when they’ll reveal what happened… in 20 years.

Warning: ‘Stranger Things’ spoilers ahead:

During a post-mortem discussion on the Happy, Sad Confused podcast, the Duffer brothers talked about the series finale and how they decided to leave the ending open-ended. The main group chooses to believe that Eleven is safe somewhere in the world after making the ultimate sacrifice. But what really happened to her?

“If we’re talking to you in 20 years,” Ross Duffer replied with a laugh when asked if that was the timeline fans can expect for a reveal, “about Stranger Things, in 20 years… I mean I hope so. I hope people still care. That would be great, and then I’ll say everything, yeah. At that point, 20 years from now.” Host Josh Horowitz only replied: “20 years from now, it’s a date. An exclusive on Happy, Sad, Confused, if I’m still alive.”

Is Eleven alive?

One theory suggests that Eleven is still alive, based on a heartbeat-like sound heard toward the end. On the podcast, Matt Duffer clarifies that the sound was indeed part of the script, but that it isn’t actually a heartbeat. “It is written in the script that it is supposed to sound like a heartbeat, but it’s actually just like… what do you call it? The brick,” he explained. “That’s what it is. It’s just distorted, but yeah, you could interpret it as that. I mean, it was meant to be interpreted as that, potentially.”
