Stranger Things finale draws massive crowds and millions in theatrical debut

Netflix’s event-style release resonated strongly with fans and exhibitors.

Stranger Things final
Update:

The journey to the Upside Down finally came to an end, and fans in the US and Canada had the option to share their emotions in cinemas to witness its conclusion. According to new box office reports, the theatrical screening of the Stranger Things finale over New Year’s was a success.

According to a report by Variety, sources indicate that the event pulled in between $25 million and $28 million. Calculating the exact box office return is somewhat complex due to the unique way tickets were sold. Rather than a standard admission price, the event utilized a voucher system. For instance, chains like AMC and Cinemark charged $20, which functioned as a credit for food and beverages. Meanwhile, Regal Cinemas opted for pricing their tickets at $11 in honor of the character Eleven. The Duffer Brothers, the show’s creators, confirmed via social media that over 1.1 million vouchers were sold, highlighting the immense community interest in sharing this cultural moment.

The future of Netflix on the big screen

2025 was a year in which Netflix continued to test the waters regarding the possibility of taking its content beyond streaming. It is worth remembering that at one point this year, the streaming service denied the Duffer brothers’ requests to release the final episode, considering that “releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want,” according to Netflix’s chief creative officer, Bela Bajaria.
