Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, on GTA 6: “Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building”
The executive notes that the studio is designing everything from scratch.
Generative artificial intelligence has become a major part of video game development. Studios are experimenting with tools that streamline certain processes, but AI has also sparked a debate about the moral limits of this technology. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed the use of artificial intelligence in GTA 6.
Although the executive does not reject AI, quite the contrary, he wanted to clarify that Rockstar Games has not used these tools to develop the new installment of the Grand Theft Auto series.
The role of generative AI in GTA 6
“On the topic of AI, I’ve been enthusiastic since the very beginning. This company’s products have always been built with machine learning and artificial intelligence. We’ve actually always been a leader in the space.” According to Zelnick, they are working on producing tools to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
“That said, do I think tools by themselves create great entertainment properties? No, there’s no evidence that that’s the case and it won’t be the case in the future,” he said. “Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building. Their worlds are handcrafted. That’s what differentiates them. They’re built from the ground up, building by building, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. They’re not procedurally generated, they shouldn’t be. That’s what makes great entertainment.”
