Studio Ghibli declares war on piracy with a triple warning
The legendary animation house Studio Ghibli has stated they will no longer tolerate unlicensed products and piracy.
One of the most beloved film companies in the world is Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio that has given us works of enormous beauty and charisma, and that has won the Oscar for best animated film on two occasions with ‘Spirited Away’ and ‘The Boy and the Heron’. The sale of Ghibli merchandise is constant, and the studio consists of multiple official stores, museums, and even a theme park in Japan, but some try to build on that success and take advantage of selling Studio Ghibli products without an official license. The animation studio has released a trilingual statement on its official website warning about it.
The statement reads: “We have confirmed that there are several stores and online shops that sell framed images and paintings taken from our films, books and other publications at extremely high prices. These products are unauthorized reproductions that infringe on Studio Ghibli’s copyrights and other intellectual property rights. Please be advised that Studio Ghibli has not authorized these activities and intends to take strict action, both civil and criminal, as applicable.”
Ghibli is clear against piracy
Studio Ghibli continued in the statement by noting that “All of Studio Ghibli’s works were created and produced by many people involving years of hard work. We release our films globally and the films and their characters are beloved by people around the world. We strive to continue to make our films, both past and future, and officially licensed products to our fans around the world for many more years. However, the sales of unauthorized copyright infringement products devalue our global image and are nothing more than unlawful sales that cannot be overlooked.”
Ghibli stands out for its commitment to art, trying to continue standing out through traditional methods in an animation industry that is increasingly digitalized and distant from its beginnings. The financial resources necessary for their productions come from many fronts, and merchandising is one of them, their work is important and a fight to avoid piracy of their licenses and products.
