DC has just revealed Suicide Squad Isekai, their upcoming anime series in which the titular group of villains gets thrown into a fantasy world for… reasons.

Suicide Squad Isekai is a new DC Comics anime series by WIT Studio

Well, we really didn’t expect this: DC is joining forces with Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio to create Suicide Squad Isekai, an anime series that’ll see the titular group of villains, apparently led by Harley Quinn, being transported to a fantasy world presumably to complete a mission for Amanda Waller.

Announced during a DC panel at Anime Expo 2023 in Los Angeles, the new anime series was revealed with the above trailer, which is only a small hint of what we can expect. It’s certainly looking cool, with some great designs by Akira Amano adapting the various characters of DC to an anime aesthetic. While we don’t have any details about a cast, what characters to expect, or even the actual plot, it’s already a very promising concept.

The trailer is extremely brief, all things considered, but it does explain why the series has the “Isekai” subtitle: you can see Harley Quinn and the Joker one minute, being their typical crime clowns, and the next shot of the trailer sees them in the middle of a fantasy world, full of knights, orcs, dragons flying around and floating islands. It’s a very trope-y design that fans of isekai anime will be familiar with, but the introduction of DC’s gallery of villains could throw a wrench into all of that.

Full screen

Suicide Squad Isekai is being directed by Eri Osada, with a screenplay by Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara. Akira Amano has been brought in to work on character designs, with additional design work by Naoto Hosoda. Kenichiro Suehiro is composing the music, and the entire production of the series is being led by WIT Studio.

For now all we can do is wait for the studios to release more news about Suicide Squad Isekai, as no other details have been given. There is currently no release window, and while there is an official website it doesn’t show anything new apart from what is in the trailer and the poster above.
