Tell me how you’re watching the 2026 World Cup, and I’ll tell you how far behind you are: not everyone celebrates goals at the same time

TV latency is the key to watching World Cup matches without spoilers.

Update:

Many people aren’t aware of this, but when we watch a soccer game, there’s always a slight delay between the moment an action takes place and the moment it appears on our TV screens. This delay is called latency, and it can vary depending on the system you’re using to watch the game. Even if you and your neighbor are both watching the 2026 World Cup at the same time, your neighbor might celebrate the goals before you do—and there’s a reason for that.

While free-to-air TV channels typically have a delay of between 2.5 and 8 seconds compared to what’s happening in the stadiums, streaming services can have a delay of between 15 and 25 seconds. And in the case of FAST platforms—free, ad-supported services—that difference can range from 30 to 60 seconds. This is why people at a bar might spoil a goal for you with their cheers if you’re watching the same game at home but via IPTV or a streaming service.

Why does latency exist, and why is it important?

The video and audio signal from a broadcast always goes through several stages: capture, encoding, compression, transmission, and distribution. The more processes involved in the operation, the more milliseconds (or even seconds) of delay there will be. Therefore, reducing latency is key when covering games and other sporting events, where every second counts in delivering the most accurate and exciting live experience.

No one likes to have the surprise of a last-minute goal or a game-changing penalty spoiled. That’s why the best way to avoid spoilers is to watch World Cup matches on traditional TV channels. Streaming is more convenient, yes, but it also adds more steps to the signal transmission process, which means you’ll see the action several seconds later.
