‘The Acolyte’ canceled: Why did the Star Wars series not get a season 2 on Disney+?

One of the last Star Wars series to debut on Disney+ ends sooner than expected. The Acolyte is canceled according to sources.

Star Wars The Acolyte

The High Republic stories that Lucasfilm and Disney had planned will likely not continue for now. According to sources close to Deadline, Star Wars: The Acolyte will not have a second season. Sources indicate that it is Lucasfilm itself who has decided that this prequel series, which takes us much further back in the history behind everything we know about Star Wars will not continue, leaving the series unfinished towards its second season. The news comes shortly after the debut of the 8-episode series, which featured Leslye Headland, creator, director and executive producer, which ended with a big cliffhanger.

The Acolyte, a ratings flop

The news comes as no surprise since Star Wars The Acolyte has been one of the most divisive series for fans of the franchise in recent years. The series debuted with a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics, however with fans it did not achieve as much success, affecting its rating, causing it to fall out of the Top 10 after only 3 episodes. Not all Star Wars series on the platform have had the same luck. While The Acolyte has suffered its cancellation, The Mandarolian, one of the first important series that the platform had, has made it past its third season. This already managed to have a spin-off with The Book of Boba Fett, and has even managed to reach the level to have its own movie with The Mandalorian & Grogu. For its part, Ahsoka, has also achieved success being renewed for a second season.

The Acolyte narrated an episode within the broader Star Wars lore at a time little touched by the main canon. The series followed a former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.
