The best turn-based role-playing game is back on Switch 1 and 2: this is Octopath Traveler 0, with a new storyline and massive battles
Octopath Traveler 0 is real, and it was the star of Nintendo Direct, which showed everything coming to Switch 1 and 2 in the coming months.
The Nintendo Direct on July 31 left no one indifferent, reminding us why the first Switch was so successful: its extensive catalog of video games. One of the highlights of this digital event was a new installment in the Octopath Traveler series coming to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2: Octopath Traveler 0. Given its name, it is a prequel to the previous two games, in which we will have to travel the length and breadth of Orsterra, the game’s world. Among its main new features are massive battles and a new plot to discover.
It’s official: this is Octopath Traveler 0, the new installment in the series and prequel to the previous two games, coming to Switch 1 and 2.
The announcement of Octopath Traveler 0 came at the end of the Nintendo Direct on July 31, 2025. Its brief but spectacular trailer has whetted the appetite of fans of this beloved turn-based JRPG franchise that was born on the first Switch.
This new installment is a prequel to the franchise, so we will be able to explore the origins of Orsterra, which is the name of the world in which these games are set. The official trailer, which is just under a minute long, shows several of the key elements of this highly anticipated title: a high level of character customization, the ability to rebuild destroyed villages as we see fit—which implies that there is a large management component—battles controlling eight characters at once, and it even suggests that the protagonists of Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 will be controllable in some way.
However, some similarities with Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent make us wonder whether Octopath Traveler 0 is a game created from scratch—pardon the pun—or whether, as some fans suggest, it is a revamped version of Champions of the Continent but with much more content. We will have to wait and see over the coming weeks or months to find out more about this title.
Octopath Traveler 0 will be available on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2025. While physical versions are expected for both platforms, it is still unknown whether the Switch 2 version will be a complete game or one of the much-maligned game-key cards, which require an internet connection because they do not include all the necessary files. Depending on the format in which its developers decide to release it, the smartest option may be to get the version of the game for the first Switch. It is also unknown whether it will be exclusive to Nintendo platforms; the first title was before making the leap to PS4 and Xbox One, while Octopath Traveler 2 was released simultaneously on Switch, PC, PS4, and PS5.
