Update:

At the end of 2025, several very perceptive members of the Red Dead Redemption 2 community discovered a mystery that has remained hidden for the nearly eight years since its release. It is an extraordinarily convoluted treasure hunt, covering a large part of the map, with no end in sight, but which is firing the imagination of players and outsiders alike about its possible meaning and what might lie at the end. While players continue to collaborate to solve the numerous puzzles, a game tester reveals that he never thought this secret would ever be discovered.

The greatest treasure hunt in Red Dead Redemption 2 history continues: its community works together to unravel the disturbing mysteries

Despite being released in 2018, by the end of 2025 there was still a great mystery to be uncovered in Red Dead Redemption 2. Dubbed the Spider Web Mystery, this incredibly complex puzzle subtly challenged players to discover several spider webs with bird feathers on different telegraph poles across the map, which only appeared at specific times of the day.

The most recent update to the puzzle is no less disturbing: when using binoculars in what appears to be a dead end, a question mark carved into rock in the mountains outside the play area can be glimpsed in the distance. This is a very clever hint to look at the map: each telegraph pole that has led us to that position forms the shape of a large inverted question mark.

However, the intrepid detectives who keep the gaming community on tenterhooks have reached a new impasse: at the location marked by the question mark on the map (Eris Field), there is a well with a striking mural carved into the wall. It shows the number 62 carved into the cave walls, along with what appear to be three tombs, three clouds, and a sun.

There are already several interpretations regarding the possible meaning, and one of the most widespread theories is that it is a reference to the end of the first Red Dead Redemption, with three graves and a son, symbolizing that Jack Marston, John’s son, is left alone after fulfilling his revenge: his parents are dead, as is his adoptive uncle, Uncle. For now, the investigation continues, so the story is far from over.

A Red Dead Redemption 2 tester never thought players would find this mystery

The interest generated by this unique treasure hunt is dominating all conversations about Rockstar video games these days. This has prompted Adam Butterworth, a former QA/tester at Rockstar on Red Dead Redemption 2, to come forward and say that he never thought something so convoluted would be found by players. “Absolutely wild people have found this. I remember hearing about this and thinking it would never be discovered,” he said on his X account.

Ultimately, the Spider Web Mystery once again highlights one of Rockstar’s greatest strengths: its ability not only to build open worlds that are as colossal as they are disturbingly realistic, but also to scatter them with all kinds of puzzles designed with Swiss watch precision. The fact that a secret of this magnitude has remained hidden for almost eight years, and is still far from being completely solved, is a testament to the extent to which Red Dead Redemption 2 was conceived as a work with an almost unfathomable amount of content.
