The Jihad marks the turning point where humanity rebelled against the dominance of “thinking machines,” a society so dependent on advanced AI and automated systems that it nearly lost its sense of autonomy.

What happened during the Butlerian Jihad?

The Butlerian Jihad, also known as the Great Revolt, was a violent struggle between humans and the intelligent machines they had once created to serve them that began in 201 BG and concluded in 108 BG. These machines, driven by logic and cold calculation, began to control every aspect of human life, posing an existential threat to freedom and individuality. As the war escalated, the movement named after its leader, Serena Butler, galvanized humanity into a fight for survival. Her personal tragedy, the loss of her child at the hands of the machines, became a rallying cry for revolution. Humanity’s eventual victory led to the complete destruction of all thinking machines.

The outcome of this war established the foundations of Dune’s universe.
