The Butlerian Jihad: The Era When All Machines Were Destroyed, is the aftermath setting for Dune: Prophecy

In the vast lore of Dune, few events are as significant as the Butlerian Jihad. The aftermath of this cataclysmic war, which serves as the setting for the upcoming ‘Dune: Prophecy’, takes place over 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert’s Dune. The Jihad marks the turning point where humanity rebelled against the dominance of “thinking machines,” a society so dependent on advanced AI and automated systems that it nearly lost its sense of autonomy.

What happened during the Butlerian Jihad?

The Butlerian Jihad, also known as the Great Revolt, was a violent struggle between humans and the intelligent machines they had once created to serve them that began in 201 BG and concluded in 108 BG. These machines, driven by logic and cold calculation, began to control every aspect of human life, posing an existential threat to freedom and individuality. As the war escalated, the movement named after its leader, Serena Butler, galvanized humanity into a fight for survival. Her personal tragedy, the loss of her child at the hands of the machines, became a rallying cry for revolution. Humanity’s eventual victory led to the complete destruction of all thinking machines.

The outcome of this war established the foundations of Dune’s universe. The ban on creating AI became an unbreakable law, leading to the rise of human institutions such as the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, and the Mentats, who developed extraordinary mental and physical abilities to fill the roles once occupied by machines.

Dune: Prophecyrecently announced its release date, November 17, with weekly episodes on MAX.
