The creator of My Hero Academia breaks his silence after the end of the series: "I feel lonely"
After ten years, the series has come to an end in the pages of Shonen Jump, and the author is grateful.
It is not easy to end a series, especially when you have invested more than 10 years of your life in creating one of the pillars of contemporary manga and anime. My Hero Academia has come to an end, it did so last August 5th and it does so in chapter 430 without having lost its popularity or appeal, leaving a feeling of satisfaction with a touch of sadness for the end of the road and for letting go of characters so beloved for so many years. And undoubtedly more than anyone else in the world, the author of the work himself, Kōhei Horikoshi, who has left some brief notes on the subject for his followers, feels this way. His first feeling is one of gratitude, both to his publisher and to his readers: “I was so happy to be in Jump! and I’m very grateful to everyone who read my series. Thank you so much.
The end of one of the mainstays of modern Shonen
The author doesn’t make many public statements, and interviewers always have to make an effort to get the mangaka to open up a bit. But in the last Oricon, we got a glimpse of his personal feelings about the completion of the work: “I feel surprisingly lonely. I’ve been thinking, ‘I can finally reach my goal’. The truth is, I don’t understand the success I’ve had, it’s not humbling. I thought, ‘Why? The truth is that he has always been reluctant to take the lead in the triumph of his work. Even when told of milestones such as reaching 100 million copies sold worldwide, the creator of ‘Boku no Hero’ has always maintained that it is not due to the quality of his work: “I don’t feel that I did it alone. I feel that I was supported by those who set up the distribution channels and decided to broadcast the anime overseas. I feel that those 100 million copies were a collaborative effort rather than something I achieved alone,” he said in another interview.
There are still things to see before the curtain falls on ‘My Hero Academia’. The anime is still streaming on Crunchyroll, also in its final season, but a bit behind the manga. Episode 13 will be released on August 17th, in a season that will have 21 episodes. On the other hand, the most important figures of the manga are already paying the deserved tribute to Horikoshi Sensei’s work, such as Eichiro Oda himself, the incombustible creator of ‘One Piece’, who made a fantastic tribute illustration not to be missed, while sardonically commenting to him that “now you can play Pokémon GO as much as you want”. In the touching illustration, Oda recalled and reinterpreted a drawing of Smoker he received from a 15-year-old Horikoshi when he was just another fan with dreams of emulating his favorite authors. There can be few better tributes than one of your references reversing a drawing you sent him when you were just another of his legions of admirers around the world.
