The creator of the Minions finally answers the most awkward question possible: Did they work for Adolf Hitler?

For some, it was just an absurd meme. For others, it was a genuine question given the nature of the characters.

Update:

For several years now, one of the most recurring jokes among ‘Minions’ fans has revolved around a question that’s as controversial as it is absurd: if these creatures always serve the greatest villain of each era, does that mean they worked for Adolf Hitler during World War II? The release of ‘Minions & Monsters’ has reignited this peculiar debate by introducing new tribes of Minions, but its creator, Pierre Coffin, has already provided a definitive answer that settles the matter once and for all.

The creator of the Minions answers the big question the internet has been asking for years

Pierre Coffin, creator of the Minions and director of several films in the franchise, was recently interviewed by Polygon in connection with the release of ‘Minions & Monsters’ (2026). Among the barrage of questions, there was inevitably a reference to one of the wildest theories about his animated series. The issue stems from the franchise’s very premise: since the Minions basically exist to serve the most evil villain of every era—such as a dinosaur, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, or even Napoleon Bonaparte—many fans have been asking themselves the same question for years: if they were present throughout history, did they also serve Adolf Hitler during World War II?

Aware of the meme’s enormous popularity, Coffin reacted with laughter as soon as he heard the question. “I knew you were going to ask me that question. Shame on you,” he joked at first, before responding that the Minions who star in the franchise were still hiding in the cave where they had remained isolated for more than a century and a half—which would have prevented them from serving under Hitler. When the reporter reminded him that ‘Minions & Monsters’ introduces new tribes of Minions scattered across the world, the director acknowledged that he was trying to dodge the question, though he finally made his answer clear: those new tribes didn’t work for Hitler either because, as he explained, “they were not part of the Big History.”

The explanation is no coincidence; the movie ‘Minions’ (2015) had already resolved this potential headache by placing the original Minions in a cave between 1812 and 1968—a time jump that avoided any connection to the two World Wars. However, the appearance of new clans in ‘Minions & Monsters’ brought back to the table a legitimate question that had been circulating for years on social media and forums, forcing Pierre Coffin to address this peculiar aspect of the canon much more explicitly than ever before.

So now there’s an official and definitive answer to one of the most frequently asked questions about the popular animated franchise from Illumination Studios, the creators of the Super Mario animated films as well. And that answer is that no Minion ever worked for Adolf Hitler… at least, not yet. If ‘Despicable Me’ and ‘Minions’ have proven anything, it’s that even the most absurd question imaginable can end up becoming a genuine query that millions of people need answered—and sooner or later, the creator ends up having to respond.
