The Devil Wears Prada 2 has its first trailer: “Thankfully, this time, [Meryl Streep] didn’t stay in character the entire time”

The sequel outlines a battle between the decline of print and the power of luxury, while the cast celebrates a return that is as strange as it is familiar.

El Diablo viste de Prada 2

The first trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2 plays on both fronts. It recaptures the vertigo of Runway, its catwalk-like corridors and its liturgy of glances. Still, it suggests a less complacent world, in which the role is fraying as the fashion business shifts to luxury as a lifeline.

The premise is clear. Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) deals with the decline of traditional print media, while encountering an unexpectedly close rival. Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), a former subordinate, now appears as an executive for a high-end fashion brand, in a position to negotiate from above and, predictably, enjoy it. The trailer hints that this reversal of hierarchies will not be a decorative detail, but rather the driving force behind a film that wants to talk about power when it changes hands.

A long-awaited return

Before the trailer debuted, the four actors shared their thoughts on the comeback in Vogue, particularly on the feeling of stepping back into a role that had never really left them. Streep described it with a domestic image that fits with the theme of the sequel. She said it was like going to the back of your closet and finding something you hadn’t seen in a long time, wondering if it still fits.

Blunt, for her part, spoke of a return “like coming home,” and joked about how unsettling she found it how easy it was to slip back into the role of Emily, whom she described as a “lunatic.” In the new film, it is clear that she is no longer the anxious assistant hungry for approval, but someone with real power and driven by the momentum of professional success.

“Practically psychedelic”: the cast talks about returning to those roles

Hathaway made the most sensory confession. She recalled a moment on set when Miranda was walking down a hallway in front of her and, seeing her from behind, the experience was “practically psychedelic.” She said that in that moment, many “portals” opened up for her, as if she were 22 again and, at the same time, still in the present. She was grateful that, this time, Streep did not stay “in character” all the time, which allowed for laughter and a lighter atmosphere between takes.

This ties in with what happened during the filming of the first movie. There, Meryl Streep decided to use the well-known Method acting that consists of permanently staying in character, which in Miranda’s case did not allow her any lightheartedness towards others. But the experience made her feel bad, as she herself recounts: “I was [miserable] in my trailer. I could hear them all rocking and laughing. I was so depressed. I said, ‘Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss.’” It was the last time she used it.

Tucci closed the circle from Nigel, as if the character had been waiting in an inner room. He explained that Nigel never really left, that there was always enough of him in his manner, and that playing him again was, in a way, “let it all out” once more.
