Bend Studio
The director of Days Gone is not happy about the game’s protagonist appearing in Astro Bot
John Garvin, director of Days Gone, has some words about Deacon St. John appearing as a “cartoon schill” on Astro Bot.
Since his departure from SIE Bend Studio, veteran writer and director John Garvin has been the subject of several controversies on social networks. The director of Days Gone accused journalists of not playing his title while calling them “woke reviewers”. According to the creative, these professionals could not stand a white motorcyclist admiring his wife’s ass, words that led to a statement from the studio distancing itself from the person who had been its head. Now, Garvin has returned to the fray and has done so by criticizing the inclusion of his character in Astro Bot, the masterful platformer by Asobi Studio that quickly became a huge hit for PlayStation.
This PS5 exclusive once again pays tribute to other PlayStation franchises, this time with the incorporation of characters from the entire history of the platform. That’s why Days Gone star Deacon St. John makes an appearance. Garvin did not like that he does, and expressed it on social networks: “Kinda sad that Deek has been reduced to promoting other games … well done Bend Studio! Way to protect your legacy!” he wrote on Twitter/X. The developer posted a drawing of the Days Gone protagonist relaxing on a beach to congratulate their colleagues at Asobi Studio.
The director of Days Gone doesn’t want his character to be used to promote other games
Another user criticized his message, and the former creative director of Bend Studio responded as follows: “I see my character reduced to a cartoon schill promoting some small game and I’m being harsh? Sit down, my brotha, adults are talking.” Garvin stated in another tweet that he does not know Astro Bot and that he wishes the studio the best, but “not at the expense of Days Gone.”
Days Gone was released in 2019 for PS4. Later, the title also saw the light of day on PC. A sequel was planned at Bend Studio, but the project did not get to enter development. Both John Garvin and game director Jeff Ross left the studio shortly after the game’s release.
