The director of ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ confirms his time with DC Studios is over
Todd Philips is done with the DC universe, revealing that he’s ready to move on after working on both the first Joker movie and Joker: Folie a Deux.
‘Joker: Folie a Deux’, the sequel to the hit 2019 film that won Joaquin Phoenix the Oscar for best actor, is likely to be the end of the character for the actor. But it seems like it’s the same for its director, Todd Philips, who has put an end to his career at DC with this film.
Phillips already assured that the story ended with this second installment, but it was still possible that it continued in James Gunn’s DC Universe, since these two films are outside of it and form a standalone plot. However, Phillips has been emphatic.
Phillips will not sign up for James Gunn’s DC Universe
“It’s not really where this movie is headed for me,” says the director, asked in an interview about a hypothetical spin-off starring Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga). “I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.”
“I think we sent her half the script, and she texted me pretty quickly that she was really into it, that she loved it and everything you want to hear,” he recalled of the casting of the iconic singer. “And then I went out to her house, and we met about what it was going to be, the rest of it, because we hadn’t written it yet. And then I went out to her house, and we met about what it was going to be, the rest of it, because we hadn’t written it yet.”
In this way, the role of the psychopathic clown is also free in James Gunn’s DC Universe, forever banishing the improbable hypothesis that Joaquin Phoenix could join it, something that was never really on the table. However, in recent days it’s been speculated that the universe of ‘The Batman’, with Robert Pattinson, could become part of the canon, which in turn would mean Barry Keoghan being the chosen one to play the Joker.
