The director of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ reveals why he’s not back for ‘Spider-Man 4’

After his success in independent cinema, with films like ‘Clown’ and ‘Cop Car’, Jon Watts was asked to carry out the Spider-Man trilogy in the MCU, doing fantastic work with the blockbuster productions. ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’, and above all, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, turned out to be a great success for Marvel Studios, with which, as expected, Kevin Feige contacted him for a fourth installment. However, Watts surprised fans with a refusal, leaving the name of whoever is behind the cameras in the next adventure of our friendly neighbor in the air.

After garnering decent reviews and raking in millions of dollars at the box office around the world, why did Watts leave ‘Spider-Man 4?’ The director himself has confessed his reasons, and they have to do with a supposed lack of freedom in the MCU, although he also recognizes that “It’s never going to be like this, ever again”, alluding to the fantastic reception that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ had.

“Sometimes you do an action movie, and all the fun action stuff is given to the second-unit director,” Watts explained. “On the Marvel movies, you split up the work because there’s so much to be done. Rarely do you get the Christopher Nolan opportunity to do all of it. On this one, I was like, ‘I want to shoot every single shot.’

Watts suggests that this is worse in the case of Spider-Man, not in vain being the most popular character in the history of the House of Ideas. “I was just getting started and Marvel came along — and I take full creative ownership over all those films — but Spider-Man is always going to be Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s creation,” he continued. “This was the chance for me to go back to my voice and my vision and my style. Wolfs is mine, and that’s a really good feeling,” he said, about the film that will be released this year starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
