The First Descendant rises to the top of the Steam Charts on release day

Nexon’s newest free-to-play shooter, The First Descendant, has risen to the top ten most-played games on Steam on its day of release.

2024 has been a good year for shooter and multiplayer game fans, what with the release of a new Destiny 2 expansion, Helldivers 2, and now, The First Descendant. Having released only today, July 2, 2024, the sci-fi looter shooter has already surprised everyone by the quickness with which it’s risen to the top of the Steam charts, as at the moment, it’s become the 5th most played game on the platform.

That’s right, only surpassed by Counter-Strike 2, Elden Ring, Dota 2, and… Banana… The First Descendant has managed to climb up the ranks on Steam with barely a few hours online. It’s quite surprising, especially considering that it is an online game, that it’s had no major issues regarding its servers on its first day, which means that Nexon managed to appropriately prepare for this massive influx of players.

As of right now, the game (which has also become the number 1 trending game on the platform) has around 169,721 concurrent players, with its 24-hour peak reaching 229,257 players. We’ll have to wait and see just how these numbers change throughout the game’s first week online, but considering it’s the middle of the week, we would expect the number to grow exponentially during the weekend.

The First Descendant brings the looter-shooter RPG genre back into the mix

The game’s official description reads as follows: “The First Descendant is a free third-person cooperative action RPG shooter featuring high-quality graphics. Experience the fun of strategic boss fights through 4-player co-op and various unique characters, exciting gunplay, and looting. A variety of equipment is necessary for growth, and you can obtain them through clearing scenario missions within the game or in the World Missions where cooperation is crucial and battles with huge bosses.”
