The first trailer for Elden Ring DLC’s, Shadow of the Erdtree, almost makes it look like a full-on sequel

FromSofftware has released the first trailer for Shadow of the Erdtree, the long-awaited DLC for Elden Ring, and we’re already in full theory crafting mode.

Lion Monsters, a fiery colossus, duels in blooming fields of blue flowers and another heir-apparent to Radagon that carries with them every single symbol of godhood we knew so far. The first trailer for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is so epic, you could almost see it as a full sequel.

Released just a few minutes before the writing of this article, FromSoftware shared the first trailer for the Elden Ring DLC. With barely more than 3 minutes of gameplay footage, the studio has managed to once again enrapture all of us fans with quick shots of what to expect from this new adventure, and we couldn’t be happier. Take a look below:

We’re certain that the loremasters of the internet are already rushing to share their many theories. We ourselves are already making our own, after all, with the trailer mentioning some very exciting themes players will recognize from the stories found in the base game. Mentions of being on the wrong side of the war make us think we might be traveling to the past of The Lands Between, perhaps right into the middle of The Shattering. A tarnished tree is confusing enough, as it looks nothing like the Erdtree and more like the Haligtree beyond the Forbidden Lands.

But most intriguing of all is what seems to be the new main foe we’ll have to face in this “Realm of Shadows” in which Melina is not able to accompany us. Revealed to be called “Messmar, the Impaler”, this red-haired warrior carries with them every symbol of heresy and outer deities we know oppose the Elden Ring itself: The warrior uses a flame blade, conjures the briars of sin with their hands, and is either wrapped or accompanied by a living serpent that seems to aid during their attacks. What kind of unholy abomination is this?

Beyond that, the trailer showcased simply way too many new things that are making their way into the game. From new monsters, weapons, and armor, to entirely new animations giving us different weapon types, a full-on martial arts build, and what seems to be different mounts other than Torrent, the trusty spectral steed of the main game. Even what seems to be the meek Roderika is shown unleashing some kind of magik on assailants, so we really don’t know what to expect.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will release very soon, on June 21, 2024. There’s also going to be a collector’s edition!
