The games of July 2024: new Final Fantasy expansion, HoYoverse’s next venture, awesome RPGs and much more
Nintendo World Championship, Kunitsu-Gami, FFXIV Dawntrail, Zenless Zone Zero… the list of games launching in July is long and exciting.
July is here and, as tradition dictates, it is not usually one of the most exciting months of the year in terms of releases. But these time, it’s actually going to be an extremely busy month for gaming, as the video game industry is getting a huge amount of releases in the next few weeks.
Two of the biggest stars of this month are, in fact, two online games with a huge amount of content, which seems appropriate now that many are enjoying vacations and free time. Furthermore, they both show up very early in the month. On the one hand, we already have the new and long-awaited expansion of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, although with some technical and server problems typical of the launch of an MMO expansion that should be adjusted as the days go by. On the other hand, this July 4th we have the latest from the creators of Genshin Impact, a futuristic Action RPG called Zenless Zone Zero, which comes in the form of a F2P and with all the features of modern gacha capable of captivating millions of players around the world whether on latest generation mobile phones or other devices (PS5 and PC in this case). Those who want a more traditional and “old school” role would do well to take a look at The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak, a new story arc in one of the oldest sagas in video games.
Nexon’s new F2P looter shooter is already among us, The First Descendant, which is having a good reception on Steam in its first days. And for survival lovers, July 9th presents Once Human, which made a very good impression at the last Steam Next Fest: make your place in a post-apocalyptic open world plagued by paranormal phenomena, a planet Earth where stardust has forever changed the planet, its flora, and its fauna. Flintlock, which appears on all formats except Switch, features a fluid combat system with magical elements packed with variety, is another action title that deserves attention.
Already designed exclusively for the current generation, we find the expansion of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, under the name The Sky Breaker. Regardless of how it turns out, it is an excellent opportunity to look at the game that Massive Entertainment made, which many people have not given a chance and should, if only for the superb audiovisual work done (although it is more than that). For its part, Nintendo has on Switch this month Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, 13 NES classics that make up more than 150 specific old-school challenges, in what is an interesting way to recover the company’s legacy, going a little further than a simple compilation of games. A new proposal from Capcom is also worth curiosity, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, in which elements of action and strategy are combined in a world full of color and Japanese myth. And continuing with Japan, there are few more iconic titles than the new Earth Defense Force, which in its sixth installment offers its particular and uninhibited action against thousands of aliens in the form of giant insects.
Here’s every title releasing this month:
