The God of War TV adaptation is restarting production after lead producers abandoned the project.

The highly anticipated God of War TV series, set to stream on Amazon Prime Video, has hit a major setback as the showrunner and executive producers have departed the project. Originally announced in 2022, the adaptation of PlayStation’s hit franchise is now undergoing a complete production reset. According to a report from Deadline, Sony Pictures and Amazon are actively seeking new creative leadership to take the series in a fresh direction.

Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time), had been tapped to serve as showrunner for God of War, with Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (writers of Iron Man and Children of Men) attached as executive producers. However, all three have since left the project. While the reason for their departure remains unclear, this shake-up leaves the future of the series uncertain as a new writers’ room is assembled to reshape the show’s direction.

The gods seem to be in trouble

The live-action adaptation was set to focus on the Norse saga of Kratos, the protagonist of the 2018 God of War video game. The plot would follow Kratos as he seeks peace in the realm of Midgard with his son Atreus after leaving behind his violent past in ancient Greece. Despite the production hiccups, Cory Barlog, the creative director of God of War (2018), remains involved as an executive producer, ensuring some continuity from the original vision.

While there’s no official update on when production will resume or when the series might debut, Sony and Amazon have reaffirmed their commitment to developing the show. Fans of the God of War franchise will have to wait a bit longer before they see the Ghost of Sparta in live action, as casting and release dates are still unknown.
