The gruesome Luke Skywalker story that never was: This is the tragedy Mark Hamill envisioned for his character

The motivations that led Luke Skywalker to retreat into seclusion in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ didn’t convince Mark Hamill, the actor who plays the character. In fact, he revealed his own idea in an interview with Bullseye.

The actor clarified that he admires director Rian Johnson, while also emphasizing that this film is “a great movie.”

An Unfortunate Domestic Accident

Mark Hamill’s story is downright bizarre: “I thought, what can cause someone to put aside their devotion to something that’s basically a religious entity, to stop being a Jedi?” he asks. “Well, the love of a woman. He gives up being a Jedi. They have a child together. At one point, the boy, a toddler, picks up an unattended lightsaber, presses the button, and dies instantly. The woman is so overcome with grief that she commits suicide.”

In ‘The Last Jedi,’ it’s revealed that Luke went into exile on Anch-to after one of his Padawans, his nephew Ben Solo, succumbed to the dark side and destroyed his academy.

All Star Wars films are available on Disney+. In recent statements, Hamill has hinted that he’s not interested in reprising his role as Luke Skywalker, but Lucasfilm is very strict about the products it’s developing, so it’s possible the actor won’t be able to say whether or not he’ll actually return to the saga.
