The isekai anime that surpasses ‘Solo Leveling’ in this key aspect
Two hugely successful animes that showcase very different protagonist development

The isekai genre has been one of the most popular in the anime industry for years, with numerous new series debuting season after season, but only a few managing to truly stand out. In recent years, two of the most talked-about titles are ‘Solo Leveling’, with a unique structure that, due to its nature and the portal-based setting, can be considered part of the genre; and ‘Shangri-La Frontier’, which demonstrates a very different approach to character development compared to the popular South Korean work.
Sung Jin-woo is arguably one of the most dominant characters in manga (or manhwa, in his case) and anime history when it comes to growth, acquiring immense power and showing chapter after chapter an astonishing improvement with seemingly no weaknesses so far. Sunraku, the protagonist of Shangri-La Frontier, does not rely merely on constant level-ups, instead prioritizing strategy and skill in many of his battles, delivering memorable scenes.

Two hugely successful animes
Understanding enemy patterns, learning their weaknesses, and even using the environment to his advantage, this is an interesting approach to the isekai genre, which we also saw in Solo Leveling during its early chapters. However, as the series progressed, this strategic element was largely abandoned due to the overwhelming power of its protagonist. This could very well change as the story advances, and when it comes to world-building, conflicts, and the overall challenges faced by its characters, Solo Leveling currently outshines Shangri-La Frontier in terms of the intrigue and the way its mystery unfolds.
