‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ animator speaks out about the leak: “Pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better”
Fans began sharing the movie online just months before its planned debut.

What should have been a moment of celebration for a community and its creators has, unfortunately, turned into a terrible situation. Announced four years ago, a film based on ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ was scheduled to be released later this year, but it was leaked over the weekend—first in snippets and then in its entirety—months before its premiere.
‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ was originally scheduled to hit theaters on October 9, but internal decisions at Paramount led to the premiere being moved to the Paramount+ streaming platform. Unfortunately, a glitch caused the film to go live online six months before its release, and some fans—upset at missing the chance to watch Aang and company in theaters—took this as an excuse. In response, one of the first voices to speak out was that of Julia Schoel, an animator on the film, who addressed the situation on her X account (formerly Twitter).
“We worked on the Aang movie for years with the expectation [that] we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters... just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on Twitter like candy. I don’t like seeing people use Paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support paramount+, but pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”

It remains to be seen whether this leak will affect Paramount’s decision regarding the film’s release, with hopes that its streaming debut might be moved up. For now, that’s not the only thing we can look forward to from this universe in the coming months. ‘Avatar: Seven Havens,’ the next chapter in the ever-changing world created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, is set to arrive in 2027, consisting of two seasons with 13 episodes each.
