The Legend of Zelda movie director gives new details about the adaptation

The arrival of Zelda in theaters will be one of the most anticipated releases of the next few years.

Wes Ball is the director in charge of the movie that will adapt The Legend of Zelda to the world of cinema. A film that Nintendo will make together with Sony, and in which the director known for films like ‘The Maze Runner’ or the future release of ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ has high hopes and expects to do something that lives up to the myth that will be responsible for giving life to the big screen.

In an interview with Total Film, Wes Ball said, “I have this awesome idea. I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be... I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape. That’s the thing I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.”

Nintendo’s success on the big screen

The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a good example of the enormous potential that Nintendo franchises have in the world of cinema. Major studios and directors can take a video game franchise that is the story of our time to the next level and reach an even wider audience through this type of adaptation.

In an interview, Ball talked about the style of Hayao Miyazaki, the master of Japanese animation, and how he wanted to reflect that style: I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that” He also emphasized what this work means to him: “I grew up on Zelda and it is the most important property, I think, that’s untapped IP, if you will. So we very much are working hard to do something. We’re not just trying to do it because we can. We want to make something really special.”
