The link between Dragon Ball Daima and the Majin Buu saga hints at its place in the timeline

Akira Toriyama’s new anime has generated a lot of excitement among Dragon Ball fans, but also some doubts, especially about its place in the timeline.

A little over a week ago, the new series ‘Dragon Ball Daima’, a new anime with Akira Toriyama himself behind the project, was presented to the world. Apart from a spectacular and promising trailer, many fans are wondering where in the timeline of the main story ‘Daima’ takes place and if the plot is canon. Regardless, the trailer itself gives us a number of clues as to when it might take place, using the Majin Buu arc as a starting point.

Where does Daima take place in the timeline?

The trailer gives us a brief glimpse of what appears to be the series’ new villains by looking at the events of the battle against Majin Buu, which places Dragon Ball Daima after the last major battle of Dragon Ball Z. Other clues offered by the trailer are that no characters from Dragon Ball Super appear, and that Goku and Vegeta do not equip the symbol of Whis, so that ‘Daima’ would take place before ‘Super’.

Majin Buu arc features heavily in Dragon Ball Daima trailer; will it be the starting point?

On the other hand, Shin and Kibito do not seem to have merged as they did during the Majin Buu arc, only to separate again in Dragon Ball Super; perhaps they had not yet merged in this timeline? Or the rejuvenation effect did it? Whatever the case, these clues suggest that “Daima” could be set after the end of the battle against Majin Buu, and that its story could be set between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, which would probably give rise to an alternate story or timeline in relation to “Super”.

What does guarantee a great care in its plot and characters is that Akira Toriyama is fully involved in the project; for now, we will have to wait until next year to discover all its secrets, when this new series celebrating the 40th anniversary of ‘Dragon Ball’ will be released.
