The Annecy International Animation Festival in France offered a total of 20 minutes of The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, giving us a first glimpse into the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien through anime art.

According to Variety, the sneak peek received “thunderous applause” during its presentation. The anime film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who has worked on Japanese animation classics such as ‘Jin-Roh’ and ‘Ghost in the Shell’ throughout his career. Thanks to Entertainmet Weekly, we have a first look at what the movie will look like. In the images we can see the protagonist of the movie Hèra and the villain Wulf. As you can see below, the images confirm a completely anime style that manages to adapt the high fantasy world created by Professor Tolkien.

The new anime movie tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, the old king of Rohan, after whom the fortress Helm’s Deep is named. It will show the confrontation between Helm himself and the army of Wulf’s Dunlendin, who seeks revenge for the death of his father Freca. The movie takes place 183 years before the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so don’t expect to see any Hobbits peeking out of their Hobbit holes.

‘The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ is one of the most anticipated movies of the year and will be released next December 13th and is known to have a running time of two hours and thirty minutes.

More Lord of the Rings productions on the way

‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ is not the only franchise production in development. Warner Bros. Discovery is currently working with Peter Jackson on other projects. The first is ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ which is slated for a 2026 release and will star and be directed by Andy Serkis. For now, there is also another project that has only been announced, but nothing else has been mentioned.
