‘The Lord of the Rings’: This is why the giant eagles couldn’t take The One Ring to Mordor
The Giant Eagles are ancient creatures from the First Age of Middle-Earth, so many wonder why they couldn’t just fly the Fellowship of the Ring all the way to Mordor.
“The eagles have come”, said Merry before Gandalf’s gaze in the battle of ‘The Return of the King’ at the Black Gate of Mordor. Giant Eagles are part of the universe created by Tolkien and are, basically, birds of great size, strength, and intelligence. Like the ones in the real world, but much bigger. In the First Age, they helped men and elves stand up to Morgoth and since then they have been seen in various works of the franchise.
There is a question that many fans of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ have asked themselves for a long time: If they are powerful creatures and can fly, why weren’t they used to bring the One Ring to Mordor? On paper, crossing the world on the back of eagles would allow Frodo, Gandalf, and their people to reach the fires of Mount Doom and fulfill their mission. However, they did not even consider it, and there are a couple of reasons to explain it.
The most obvious reason is that, as Gandalf has always pointed out, entering Mordor is a task that can only be done stealthily, hence both he and Aragorn, Legolas, and hundreds of warriors bet everything on fighting to attract the attention of Sauron’s eye and thus buy a few moments for Frodo and Sam, who could then enter Mount Doom undetected. If they arrived flying on the backs of eagles, Sauron would have discovered them immediately.
The other reason is that the eagles in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ are indomitable creatures that do not obey anyone’s orders, but they appear and act on rare occasions and by their own decision. They helped Gandalf escape from Isengard after being imprisoned by Saruman. in his tower and at the end of ‘The Return of the King’ they appeared in Mordor to save Frodo and Sam moments before they were consumed by fire.
