It’s not every day that you find classic pieces of development from old games just lying around the internet, but anytime it does happen it’s like opening a birthday gift you didn’t expect. So if you enjoy video game history, you’re in luck: the original storyboard for the Super Smash Bros. opening cutscene has been rediscovered.

The digital archeological feat can be attributed to David V. Kimball, a Marketing Director for cloud solutions company that makes videos online about Super Smash Bros. Melee. As it turns out, Kimball was messing around with the Wayback Machine on HAL Laboratory’s official website, when he happened upon design documents for the Nintendo 64 title that detail the plans for the opening cutscene of the game.

You can actually take a look for yourself through this link, which leads to the archived site that includes the images shared by Kimball. These drawings and their corresponding descriptions were created by Masahiro Sakurai himself, the director of the original game that has been in charge of the series ever since its inception, and who has spent the last few years creating a video game design series on YouTube where he shared the knowledge he has acquired throughout his long career in the industry and with Nintendo.

According to the Google translation of the archived site, the text there reads as follows: “We have selected a scene from the Nintendo 64 software “Super Smash Bros.”, a smash hit that has sold over 5 million copies worldwide and is still going strong. We will be revealing the storyboard for the opening screen, hand-drawn by the game planner.” Haven’t played the original Super Smash Bros. yet? Take a look at the final product:
