The PlayStation 5 console family will increase in price starting tomorrow
Sony cites “challenging economic environment” for price adjustment.
The cost of goods has been rising in recent months, and this is now also affecting video games. Sony has announced a price increase across the entire PlayStation 5 console family in the United States, effective tomorrow, August 21.
In a post on its official blog, PlayStation announced this price increase, which will bring the base PlayStation 5 to $549.99, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition to $499.99, and the PlayStation 5 Pro to $749.99. All three consoles will see a $50 price increase each.
“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President, Global Marketing wrote in a short statement shared today. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”
For now, only consoles are receiving a price increase from Sony. “The recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged, and we have no other price changes to announce for additional markets,” the publication concludes.
A global price increase
It comes as no surprise that PlayStation is increasing the price of its consoles, considering that it has been doing so in different regions for several years now. Previously, the increase had affected consoles since 2022 in the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
Fears of price increases for consoles began this year due to tariff increases imposed by the current US government. This has led to price increases even for previous-generation consoles, such as the Nintendo Switch.
If you haven’t bought the PlayStation 5 yet, hoping that the price will drop, well, today might be the best day to buy it.
