The PlayStation 5 redesign is real, and it will be available this holiday season

Sony has just revealed a hardware redesign coming very soon for both PlayStation 5 models, making them smaller and lighter but keeping all of their functionality.

After months of speculation and rumors, Sony has finally confirmed a PlayStation 5 redesign. Two new models of the console are being released this November, and while performance-wise they aim to be similar to what is currently on offer, their size and weight have been greatly reduced.

The announcement was made on the early morning of October 10, 2023, through the PlayStation Blog and the company’s X/Twitter account. As mentioned above, these redesigns focus on addressing one of the largest issues with the original consoles: their size. Keeping the exact same features that can be found on current PS5s, but packed into a smaller form factor with some additional functionality, this new “PlayStation 5 Slim” is 30% smaller and 18% lighter than the previous iteration.

Other notable changes include redesigned covers that are half glossy and half matte, as well as the ability to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 later if you get the PS5 Digital Edition, allowing an easier point of entry to the console and easy upgrade paths.

Is the old PlayStation 5 going to be obsolete?

As it stands, this console redesign will be available for both the Physical and Digital versions of the PlayStation 5, and will substitute the original models eventually. But the internal components are all exactly the same, meaning there is theoretically no difference in performance between the original models and these new ones. However, once the current model sells out, the new model will be the only available one. Just a heads up for would-be collectors.

The new PS5 model will be available in retail around the world with the following prices:

U.S.

  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 499.99 USD
  • PS5 Digital Edition – 449.99 USD
