The producer behind Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D wants to remake Final Fantasy VI

Square Enix seems intent on making the most out of their HD-2D engine, with the heads of its biggest projects already dreaming about what could come next.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is the latest Square Enix release with its brand new graphics engine that started with the first Octopath Traveler and that has since brought us a sequel to it, an excellent strategy RPG like Triangle Strategy and a fantastic remake of Live a Live that brought the game to the West for the first time. A way to bring and evolve the pixel art that many continue to dream about and want to see some of the most legendary JRPGs in history, among which, of course, is Final Fantasy VI, which for many is the best installment of the saga. Masaaki Hayasaka, producer of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, has now mentioned in an interview with Inverse that he would like to work on a remake of that title with this new engine.

Regarding the game that he would like to see a remake in this graphic style, he noted that “It’s not that we have concrete plans for this, but personally I would have to say Final Fantasy VI,” Hayasaka tells Inverse, “Octopath Traveler—the first HD-2D title—was developed while referencing FFVI, as it had the highest quality pixel art. I would love to see how the game we referenced would look with the HD-2D art style.”

In addition, Hasayaka highlighted that ever since this art style was created with titles like Octopath Traveler, it became apparent that it was compatible with games originally created with pixel art. “This compatibility is probably why people feel that this style fits perfectly with these types of remakes.”

The enormous success of HD-2D

With several games under its belt, the HD-2D graphics engine is a huge success for Square Enix and the video game industry. Now in 2025, we expect the launch of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake to completely close the Erdrick trilogy.
