The producers behind the ‘Uzumaki’ adaptation explain why the animation quality dropped so sharply
The fall in quality of the ‘Uzumaki’ animation seems to have an explanation, as the producers of the anime have opened up about their production issues.
‘Uzumaki’ aimed to be the anime of the year, but now it ended up becoming a meme. The adaptation of Junji Ito’s manga, considered a masterpiece of the horror genre, premiered on September 29 on Max and has gone from a first chapter with exceptional animation quality to a second that looks like it was made by an amateur studio. Everything from one week to the next and without explanation Until now.
One of the producers of the series has come out to ask for respect and understanding. He assures that after the first episode, a large part of the animation team was dismantled and three options were offered to the few that remained. The first, abandon and cancel the project. The second, finish the first episode and consider the anime incomplete. And the third, finish the four episodes as they were and push them out as they were.
“After waiting so long, it makes sense people would be mad. Unfortunately I can’t tell them who to blame it on… but someone is definitely at fault here, and we all just had to do our best when things imploded. Maybe others would have made different choices. We did the best we could with what we had. But again, a lot of people worked very hard on this show and I didn’t think the actions of just one or two people should be the reason it never saw the light of day.”
The statement comes from Jason DeMarco, executive producer of ‘Uzumaki’ and vice president and head of anime series at Adult Swim and Warner Bros. Animation. His words do not invite optimism regarding the two remaining episodes and they point to both companies.
