‘The Rings of Power’ reveals one of the key elements in Sauron’s downfall

Bad times for Númenor, a kingdom of glorious light shrouded in the shadows of treachery. During the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, set in the Second Age, events are leading the city to a fateful destiny. The king is dead and his daughter, Míriel, the rightful heir, has been usurped from his throne. Pharazôn seizes power and persecutes Elendil and other citizens, branding them traitors. In this situation, the dethroned queen decides to remain in Númeror to face the delicate conflict. It is then that a very strange object comes into play.

In one of the sequences of the final episode of ‘The Rings of Power’, Míriel gives Elendil the sword, a weapon unlike any other, though at that moment no one knows what role it will play in the future. Legend has it that it was forged by the dwarf Telchar in the time of the First Age, many years before the events of the series. It was forged in the city of Nogrod, the dwarven stronghold in the Blue Mountains of Middle-earth.

Elendil wielded Narsil in the War of the Last Alliance, after the fall of Númmeror and his coronation as King of Gondor. Elves and Men fought together against the armies of Sauron at the foot of Mount Doom. At that moment, Elendil, with his last breath of strength, attacked the Dark Lord with all his might, but Narsil was torn to pieces. As the monarch fell, his son Isildur took the remains of the blade and managed to sever Sauron’s finger, snatching the ring from him and saving Middle-earth... for now.

The One Ring became uncontrollable and Isildur became its prisoner. Then the artefact was lost for thousands of years until Sméagol found it. Or rather, until the Ring found him. In the Third Age, Aragorn, descendant of Elendil and Isildur, at first denied his destiny, but eventually reforged Narsil and accepted his fate as the true ruler of Gondor. The return of the king.
