The Simpsons permanently kills off a 34-year Springfield character in season 37
Springfield mourns as the show retires one of its oldest recurring characters.

The town of Springfield has recently said a final goodbye to one of its longest-running, albeit secondary, characters. In a move that surprised many viewers, the venerable animated series, ‘The Simpsons,’ permanently killed off Alice Glick, the organist of Springfield’s First Church.
The character’s unexpected demise occurred during a sermon in the November 16 episode. Alice Glick, who has been a recognizable face in Springfield for an impressive 34 years across 35 seasons, first appeared in the Season 2 episode, 'Three Men and a Comic Book,' back in 1991. Initially voiced by the late Cloris Leachman, the role was later taken over by Tress MacNeille.

A permanent exit and lasting legacy
For devoted fans of the show, this isn’t the first time Alice Glick’s life has seemed to hang in the balance; a memorable Season 22 incident saw her attacked by a ‘Robopet.’ However, this time, co-showrunner Tim Long confirmed the finality of the character’s fate. “In a sense, Alice the organist will live forever, through the beautiful music she made,” Long shared with EW. “But in another, more important sense, yep, she’s dead as a doornail.”
The significance of this passing was highlighted in the Season 37 episode, ‘Sashes to Sashes.’ The episode featured a memorial service organized by Springfield Elementary, where a touching revelation was made: Alice bequeathed her entire estate to the school. This substantial donation will be used to fund a much-needed new music program, ensuring her love for music will live on through Springfield’s youth.

The creative team’s decision to establish a permanent death for Alice Glick is noteworthy, especially coming only months after the show featured the hypothetical demise of Marge Simpson in a future-set episode, which ignited fan discussions about what constitutes “canon” in the flexible Simpsons universe.
