‘The Social Reckoning,’ the spiritual sequel to ‘The Social Network,’ makes its debut in its first teaser trailer

In early 2025, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin revealed that he was already working on a sequel to the 2010 film ‘The Social Network.’ At the time, the film didn’t have a title, but it did have a theme: exploring how Facebook had impacted society. This morning, the first trailer of ‘The Social Reckoning’ was released, featuring Jeremy Strong in the role of Mark Zuckerberg instead of Jesse Eisenberg.

A companion piece to ‘The Social Network’

This is how the film, written and directed by Sorkin, is described. According to its synopsis, ‘The Social Reckoning’ “is based on the events that led to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking exposé The Facebook Files. The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen (Mickey Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to embark on a dangerous journey that ultimately exposes the social network’s most closely guarded secrets.”

The Facebook Files, a series of investigative articles published in October 2021, exposed a series of internal company documents, revealing how Facebook, now Meta, was aware of the detrimental effects of its algorithms and policies on society, including their impact on the mental health of young people and the proliferation of misinformation.

The cast will also include Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), Billy Magnussen (Bridge of Spies), Betty Gilpin (Glow), Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Wire), and more. On the music front, Alexandre Desplat will take over the role previously held by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
