Update:

For many, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001) remains the magnum opus of Hideo Kojima, one of the most influential video game developers in the history of the medium. A quarter of a century after its release, the source code for this cult classic has been leaked, and among the most unusual discoveries is content that was censored and removed at the last minute due to the September 11 attacks in New York.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Exposed: Full Source Code Leaked, a Major Victory for Preservation

In early May 2026, the entire source code for Metal Gear Solid 2 HD, along with its assets, was leaked on the website 4chan. X profiles specializing in the franchise, such as @MGSMGN, reported on the discovery, arguing that the leak may have originated from the work of Armature Studio, which worked on the port of this version of the game for PlayStation Vita. However, the findings in the code go far beyond the HD version and also affect the original title released in 2001, as well as the PC and Xbox versions.

As if that weren’t enough, additional material has also been discovered, including the script files for the original E3 trailer and gameplay sequences cut from the final version—such as the escape from the sinking oil tanker, where players would have controlled Snake. However, the most significant discovery is the content that was censored due to the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York. One such moment was a sequence near the end of the game, where Arsenal Gear, a massive mobile military fortress, crashed into the island of Manhattan, leaving Solidus and Raiden on solid ground and ready to face off in their final duel.

Although the existence of sequences like the one described was already known, the restoration of this lost content has been carried out through rough reconstructions by fans. Now, this recovery—as well as potential technical improvements and future visual restorations—can be achieved at a much deeper level than was possible through previous reverse engineering alone.

This marks an unprecedented milestone in the unique history of one of the greatest video games of all time. Having unrestricted access to the game’s internal structure will allow the modding community to restore lost content, more accurately document the game’s internal workings, and ultimately preserve Hideo Kojima’s original vision before 9/11 forced Konami to make certain changes to the title prior to its release to avoid offending the sensibilities of the American public.
