The Star Wars KOTOR remake is still in development despite rumors of a cancelation

Two Saber Interactive employees have revealed that the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic remake hasn’t been canceled, according to a new report.

The soap opera of the development of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake is far from over. There’s been a change of studio involved, Sony removed the official trailer, then said it was because of a rights issue and later rumors came to light that questioned the development of the project. And so far, Saber Interactive hasn’t said anything at all, although journalist Jason Schreier at Bloomberg has dismissed all this gossip, without taking its launch for granted.

“Can’t say whether the KOTOR Remake will ever actually *come out*, but yes, two people from Saber Interactive tell me they’re still on it, despite recent rumors that nobody is working on the game,” he stated on social media.

What happened to the Star Wars KOTOR Remake?

Star Wars KOTOR Remake was announced during a PlayStation Showcase back in 2021. Not long after, Bloomberg revealed that the project had changed hands. Aspyr, the studio behind some remasterings of Star Wars classics, invested a significant sum of money in designing an internal demo, which did not convince Lucasfilm Games. Development was then transferred to Saber Interactive.

Embracer Group, the company that owns Aspyr and Saber Interactive, has carried out an aggressive policy of cuts, which has resulted in the dismissal of employees and the closure of studios like Volition, the developer of Saints Row. Throughout these years, the conglomerate has dedicated itself to making acquisitions, including Gearbox Software, the creators of Borderlands.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake for PS5 and PC is set thousands of years before the classic trilogy, in a time when the Jedi fought against powerful Sith. This era is once again canon, although the events narrated in the video game are still considered Legends.
