The Steam Controller has a useless—but hilarious—Easter egg that makes it scream when dropped

A week after launch, users uncovered a playful Easter egg tied to one of cinema’s most iconic sound effects.

Update:

A week after its chaotic launch, Steam Controller users have discovered a useless but fun feature: making the device scream.

What initially seemed like a rather unusual feature was confirmed by users on both YouTube and Reddit. When you drop the controller, it emits a very distinctive sound that you’ve probably heard thousands of times while watching a movie or TV show.

How do you make the Steam Controller scream?

If you’re one of the lucky ones who’s managed to get your hands on a Steam Controller, here’s what you need to do. But first and foremost, we recommend doing this on a soft surface, such as your bed or a cushion, to prevent damage.

  1. What you need to do is set your PC to Steam Big Picture mode in the menu.
  2. Make sure you have the controller connected.
  3. Drop it and listen

This lets you discover a unique Easter egg, since technically the Steam Controller doesn’t have a speaker as such, and it makes you hear the famous Wilhelm Scream through the controller’s vibration motors. Also, if it happens multiple times, you’ll only hear a single scream.

The Wilhelm Scream is one of the most recognizable sound effects in cinema, and you’ve surely heard it in movies like ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Indiana Jones,’ or even ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ as it appears in over 400 films. The sound was originally used in the 1951 film ‘Distant Drums,’ and since then its use has become popular whenever someone is about to fall.
