Update:

In the end, the Duffer brothers’ wish will come true and Stranger Things will hit the big screen. Netflix announced that the season finale of one of its most iconic series will be screened in more than 350 theaters in the United States and Canada.

The final episode of Stranger Things season five, titled “The Rightside Up,” will be two hours long and will debut on Netflix on December 31. The episode will be available in theaters at the same time it is released on Netflix, on December 31 at 5:00 p.m. PT, and will remain in theaters until January 1. For now, Netflix has said that it will soon provide more details about its theatrical release.

A complete turnaround in the decision

Just last week, the Duffer brothers lamented the streaming service’s decision not to bring the series finale to the big screen, despite recent efforts with other properties. Even at the time, Bela Bajaria commented in an interview that “A lot of people [...] have watched Stranger Things on Netflix. It has not suffered from a lack of conversation or community or sharing or fandom. I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want.”

With the long duration of these episodes, and the repeated mentions by their creators that they would be the length of a movie, everything has finally fallen into place for us to see the Upside Down on the big screen.

Season 5 of Stranger Things will premiere its first volume on November 26, with a total of four episodes. The following episodes will premiere later in December.
