Happy Mario Day! Every year on March 10, we celebrate an extraordinary day for the video game industry, the one that represents the most mythical of its characters, and Nintendo has not missed the opportunity to announce a real bombshell. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now official, with a release date of April 3, 2026.

In a video presented by Mario’s father, Shigeru Miyamoto, in which he first emphasized that “we are now working with the folks at Illumination on a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” Miyamoto-san also emphasized that “’The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, released last spring, continues to be watched by many people, including over the holidays and into this year! Thank you all very much. The team at Illumination, who worked on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is also producing this new film, together with Nintendo.

The return of a huge theatrical hit for Nintendo

Following the announcement, Miyamoto gave way to Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, who began by wishing “Happy Mario Day to everyone watching. I’m thrilled to be here alongside with Miyamoto San who officially announced our return to the Super Mario Bros.” Meledandri confirmed that “our directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and our very talented artists at Illumination Studios Paris, who brought the Mushroom Kingdom to life in ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ have been busy at work storyboarding scenes and developing set designs for new environments. We’ll start the animation soon, and rest assured it will be obsessing over every detail, to get it just right. The film will arrive on April 3rd, 2026 in the US, and many other markets globally, with a few selected territories releasing over the month of April.”

After confirming the release date, Chris Meledandri gave the floor back to Shigeru Miyamoto, who pointed out “We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it!”
