The theory about the Three-Eyed Crow that links ‘House of the Dragon’ to ‘Game of Thrones’

A theory that fans had been pondering for 13 years and that was ultimately confirmed by the current series set in the universe created by George R.R. Martin.

The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe is as complex as it is fascinating. So much so that the stories created by George R.R. Martin offer a wealth of material, with countless mysterious characters, puzzles to solve, and plotlines that have kept fans on the edge of their seats for years. And while some of its secrets are gradually revealed as the story unfolds, others remain shrouded in mystery even years after the end of the award-winning HBO series, which concluded seven years ago. Well, one of these mysteries was finally resolved at the end of the second season of the spin-off series ‘House of the Dragon,’ and it has to do with the Three-Eyed Crow.

The Identity of the Three-Eyed Crow

Now that the third season of ‘House of the Dragon’ is about to premiere, what better time to revisit one of the storylines that directly connects this spin-off to the main series? Thus, the visions of Prince Daemon, played by Matt Smith, not only unsettle the viewer but also tie into the original ‘Game of Thrones’ series, revealing the identity of another prominent member of the Targaryen family: the Three-Eyed Crow.

The Three-Eyed Crow is a truly powerful mystical figure in the universe of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire,’ the book series on which the television show ‘Game of Thrones’ is based. He is a “greenseer,” a being with magical and prophetic abilities capable of seeing the past, present, and future across time. An ancient adversary of the White Walkers and Brandon Stark’s spiritual guide through the lands beyond the Wall, thanks to his visions.

Later, he passes his powers on to Bran; however, the identity of the Three-Eyed Crow is not revealed in the series—until ‘House of the Dragon.’ In the final episode of Season 2, Daemon Targaryen has a revelatory vision in the tree at Harrenhal. Through it, he is able to see the ancient prophecy from ‘A Song of Ice and Fire,’ thus glimpsing the future. And it is there that he sees the Night King and his descendant: Daenerys Targaryen.

He also sees a man whose limbs are entwined with the branches of a tree, much like the Three-Eyed Raven from ‘Game of Thrones.’ His features—with white hair and a raven-shaped mole—suggest that he is Brynden Rivers, also known as the Bloodraven.

Who is Brynden Rivers?

Brynden Rivers is one of King Aegon IV Targaryen’s bastard sons. He lived before the events of the ‘Game of Thrones’ novels and served as Hand of the King to two kings during the Blackfyre Rebellion. For his role in the execution of Aenys Blackfyre, another Targaryen bastard, Brynden was punished by King Aegon V, who sent him to the Wall as a member of the Night’s Watch.

There, Rivers was promoted to Lord Commander, only to disappear one day north of the Wall; he was never heard from again. The Targaryen sword Dark Sister, which Daemon also wields in ‘House of the Dragon,’ disappeared with him. Fans had been speculating for years about the identity of the Three-Eyed Crow, based on clues provided in ‘Game of Thrones.’ Until the vision in ‘House of the Dragon’ shed the necessary light.
