‘The Three-Body Problem’ finale explained on Netflix: what is the Wallfacer project and will there be season 2?
The first season of the new series from the creators of ‘Game of Thrones’ left everyone in suspense.
‘The Three-Body Problem’ has been available on Netflix for a few days now. It is one of the most expensive science fiction series in history and, as expected, many people took advantage of these Easter days to enjoy a marathon of episodes and finish the first and only - for now - season. If this is your case, you might be looking for an explanation of the ending.
In the final episodes of the season, a group of scientists must prepare to defend themselves against the invasion of the San-Ti, a technologically advanced alien species whose goal is nothing less than to travel to Earth, wipe out all traces of humanity, and make the planet their new home, as their home planet is on the verge of collapse. However, things do not go too well and the last scenes of the series have left some doubts: what does the end mean? will there be a second season?
What is the Wallfacer Project?
The United Nations has a plan called the Wallfacer Project. It is a special program consisting of three people, including Saul, one of the main characters. The purpose of the group is to plan ideas and strategies to fight the San-Ti and defend against their possible attacks. The San-Ti can hear absolutely everything that happens on Earth, but they have one limitation: they cannot read people’s minds.
For this reason, members of the Wallfacer Project have only one rule: they must act in silence and store their ideas in the only safe place there is, which is none other than their minds. There are no other rules; they have unlimited resources and no need to justify any of their actions.
The Ending of ‘The Three-Body Problem’
The ending of the series may seem sad and disheartening, but it’s not a goodbye, but a see you later. As Jin and Saul look up at the stars in a pool with a grim look on their faces, Da Shi decides to lift their spirits with a reflection that invites not only hope but thinking about Season 2 of ‘The Three-Body Problem’.
If you have watched the series, you will have noticed that the aliens (Sant-Ti) refer to humans as insects. A way of calling them that makes it clear that they see themselves as beings far superior to humans, but is that really the case? Seeing a huge plague of locusts flying over some crops, Da Shi reminds everyone that humans have been trying to eradicate the insects for centuries with poisons, incineration, and other methods... But they remain.
What if the war has just begun?
‘The Three-Body Problem’ is available exclusively on Netflix.
