The true story of ‘Sweet Bobby’, a 9-year romance scam you can watch on Netflix
Remember, don’t talk to strangers on the Internet.
More and more people are meeting online, but along with the love stories come the heartbreaks. Netflix seems to have a use for such stories, and after the success of ‘The Tinder Swindle’ a few years ago, a new documentary comes to tell us about an online scam victim with ‘Sweet Bobby’, which follows Assi, a successful publicist, who was the victim of an elaborate emotional scam for nine years.
The real story behind ‘Sweet Bobby’
In 2009, Kirat received a friend request on Facebook from “Bobby,” an attractive cardiologist who, like her, belonged to London’s Sikh community. With common contacts, Kirat accepted the request and a long online relationship began. Over the years, “Bobby” offered numerous excuses for not meeting in person: sudden surgeries, family problems, even a stroke and his entry into the Witness Protection Program.
What happened to the real Bobby?
After nearly a decade of lies, Kirat became suspicious. She decided to investigate on her own, with the help of a private investigator, and track down “Bobby’s” identity. Her search led her to Brighton, where she discovered that the man whose photos were being used had no idea who she was. It wasn’t until Kirat and the real Bobby filed a police report in 2018 that Simran, Kirat’s cousin, admitted to creating dozens of fake profiles to keep the charade going. Although Simran had been manipulating Kirat for years, the police did not take action against her because catfishing is not recognized as a crime in the UK.
‘Sweet Bobby’ premiered on Netflix on October 16.
