The truth about Pennywise in ‘It: Welcome to Derry’: how he became the creature
The original clown was a family man in a delicate situation.
It seems like a quiet town, but it hides a dark secret. In Derry, the history of missing children is extensive and repeats itself every 27 years, when Pennywise returns from his slumber. “It: Welcome to Derry,” the new HBO prequel series, recounts the creature’s origins.
Pennywise was an ordinary man, a guy who worked as a clown in the circus, before leaving the big stage and ending up in a traveling fair. After the death of his wife, he lives with his daughter Ingrid, who also wants to follow the family tradition and perform as a clown.
Pennywise falls into the creature’s hands
In one of the scenes in episode seven, Pennywise appears without makeup. He is drinking alone from a flask and exudes a bitter and sad tone. Suddenly, a child comes out of the woods and tells him that he cannot find his parents. It is, of course, a trick by the creature, who is trying to lure him into his domain. Shortly after, Ingrid is told that her father has died, possibly from wild wolf bites.
Years later, Ingrid encounters her father again. Or rather, she sees someone who physically resembles her father. In reality, the monster devoured him and stole his physical appearance, albeit with more macabre features. The woman, now an adult, does not realize the terrible truth until the end, but by then it is too late.
