There is a big doubt among fans if Luffy could beat this legendary pirate in Gear 5: “Nobody knows, not even Oda”

The shonen manga has as one of its most characteristic points the debates about the level of power of its various characters, and if there is one work that lends itself especially well to this, it is ‘One Piece’. Almost three decades of continuous content by Eiichiro Oda go a long way, and one of the big questions revolves around the abilities of Shanks the redhead and Monkey D. Luffy, two characters we know from the first chapter of the manga and who are gradually getting closer in every way.

Now that Luffy is becoming more powerful and Gear 5 is already a reality, many are wondering: Is Luffy in this form strong enough to defeat Shanks? An unanswered question, but one that can be theorized based on what we know. Despite being the protagonist and possibly the most powerful character in the entire series, it would not be easy for him to defeat someone of Shanks' power, and we have yet to see an absolute sample of his abilities.

A dream match, but with a clear favorite

Luffy and Shanks currently share the same title, both members of the Yonko, the Four Emperors, the most powerful pirate captains in the world. For almost three decades, the reunion between the protagonist and the red-haired man has been one of the most anticipated moments. Although it is possible that they will never face each other, especially now that the theory of Shanks as a villain is practically buried, the debates about their current power levels and the outcome of a possible fight are still there.

On Reddit, many users have dared to give their opinion, with comments like “Nobody f***ing knows, not even Oda” or the almost certainty that the two will not face each other. Still, many agree that given the level of haki Shanks has shown, Luffy would have no chance of defeating him in a fight. One of the biggest problems? Stamina, one of the biggest obstacles that the protagonist of ‘One Piece’ currently faces and that he will have to improve in this final part of the series in order to face all the obstacles that are to come.
