This First Generation Pokémon receives the most absurd and unexpected Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Pokémon Legends: Z-A reveals a new Mega Evolution: Mega Victreebel. It is a very unexpected new Mega form that has provoked positive reactions among fans.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A continues to reveal new and unprecedented Mega Evolutions that will debut when this title hits stores next October. Part of the great excitement surrounding this video game is precisely to see which classic Pokémon will receive a new Mega form, and the latest announcement has caused much laughter among fans. The most recent selection to join the Olympus of Mega Evolution Pokémon is none other than Victreebel, a creature from the First Generation that was not very popular at the competitive level, but enjoyed some fame as one of James’ Pokémon from Team Rocket in the anime.
Victreebel is the new Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and fans are going wild
The Pokémon Company International is keeping the hype for Pokémon Legends: Z-A sky high by offering little tidbits of information about it in the weeks leading up to its release. A few days ago, they introduced Mega Dragonite, whose design received mixed reviews, and now it’s time for Mega Victreebel, a new Mega Evolution Pokémon whose new form will debut in this upcoming Switch and Switch 2 title. To introduce it, two different trailers have been released: one CGI found footage-style trailer where several researchers try to solve the “mysterious sweet scent incident” in an abandoned building in Lumiose City, and another more conventional trailer where we see the creature in-game, in all its glory.
As you know, Mega Evolution is a mechanic that debuted in Pokémon X and Y (2013) and will be returning in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Basically, it consists of giving a Pokémon on your team a lot of power and even type changes in the middle of battle, something that added a new layer of strategy to battles after its debut. The design of Mega Victreebel has provoked mostly positive reactions: from the classic carnivorous plant appearance we all remember, it has evolved into a much more inflated and exaggerated version of the character. Such is its level of swelling that it moves around, bouncing slightly, as if it were a beach ball. Don’t be fooled by its appearance, though; this creature is still very dangerous and will be the talk of Pokémon battles.
Normally, Mega forms give Game Freak a second chance to redesign some of its most popular creatures, usually giving them a much more menacing appearance. However, with Mega Victreebel, the opposite has happened: the chubby version of this Pokémon is funnier and seemingly more harmless than the standard version, which has caused a lot of laughter and amusing reactions among fans.

Victreebel is the final form in the Bellsprout evolutionary line, and it wasn’t particularly popular in the competitive scene of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, possibly because it required a Leaf Stone to evolve from Weepinbell, meaning that many players would never even know it existed. However, this creature gained a peculiar legion of fans thanks to its multiple appearances in the Pokémon anime, as one of the Pokémon used by James from Team Rocket. A recurring gag with this character was that he ended up trying to be eaten by Victreebel, not out of malice, but because it was this Grass-type Pokémon’s way of showing him affection. It remains to be seen whether Mega Victreebel will be able to “cuddle” us similarly in the video game.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 16, 2025.
