This is how long it would take to download Netflix’s entire catalog using the world’s fastest internet connection
Japan accelerates the future with a connection that downloads astonishingly fast.
Internet transfer speed is something that has been increasing over the years, improving not only the upload and download bandwidth rate, but also its stability. And since the important leaps we have had since the beginning of the century to speeds like 5G on our smartphones, it seems that there is not enough speed to have access to everything.
But how fast can the speed of the Internet go? A group of researchers at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan has set a new world record: 402 terabytes per second. This milestone marks a huge advance in how fast we can use the Internet.
But in more mundane terms, this is about 4 million times faster than the average broadband speed in the United States. In an aspect that can help us put it in perspective, downloading the entire Netflix catalog, which has an estimated 100 terabytes, would take less than 3 seconds. Surely with this speed, we would not have buffering problems or low resolution in the first few seconds.
State-of-the-art technology, no special cables
The achievement was made possible through the use of a technology known as multi-band wavelength division multiplexing, combined with advanced optical amplifiers. Transmission was over 31 miles of commercial fiber optics, meaning that no custom cables were used and no massive infrastructure investments would be required for future deployment.
In addition to breaking records, this new mark surpasses Japan’s previous achievement in 2023, when they reached 319 Tbps. According to the NICT, the goal is to commercialize this technology by the 2030s, which could lead to advanced applications such as instant virtual reality, more efficient artificial intelligence and faster and more sustainable data centers.
