This is Superman's Emotional Tribute to 'Dragon Ball' in Memory of Akira Toriyama

Issue 4 of the comic book ‘My Adventures with Superman’ shares its alternate cover in a clear homage to the latest volume of the ‘Dragon Ball’ manga.

Two of the most famous characters in popular culture, such as Superman and Goku, have crossed paths in a tribute to Akira Toriyama, the famous mangaka creator of ‘Dragon Ball’ who died unexpectedly a few months ago. In fact, issue number 4 of the comic ‘My Adventures with Superman’ has presented its alternative cover in memory of Toriyama himself, a representation of the mythical cover of the last volume of the manga ‘Dragon Ball’, with the Man of Steel taking the place of Goku, with the same pose and attitude: “Thank you! Goodbye!!!” said Goku in his great illustration.

Superman’s tribute to Akira Toriyama

The next issue of the comic book ‘My Adventures with Superman’ — to be released on September 4th — will feature an alternative cover with a clear reference to the cover of the latest volume of the ‘Dragon Ball’ manga, illustrated by Ricardo Lopez. And in it, we see Superman copying Goku’s pose in an illustration that will thrill ‘Dragon Ball’ fans. Rarely do we see two such famous characters cross paths in such a special way.

However, unlike the original composition in which Majin Buu appears on a spaceship with the number 42 — the number of the same volume — in the case of the alternative cover of Superman we see other protagonists of the series, with the iconic globe of the Daily Planet in the background. Let’s not forget that the character of Goku has a very similar origin to that of DC’s Kryptonian superhero; now, thanks to this nod, the circle is complete.

Akira Toriyama’s work is full of nods and references to other works of popular culture, such as American superhero comics. It is therefore especially exciting to see these same sagas and franchises pay their own tribute to a figure as influential as Akira Toriyama.
